Email Mazie Hastings
325 W White Mountain Boulevard
Lakeside, AZ 85929
Term: August 2018 to November 2022
She was Valedictorian of her graduating class at Oakland Technical High School. She then attended UC - Berkeley, eventually earning two advanced degrees – one in Library Science, and another in English.
Mazie is a Past President of the League of Women Voters of the Bay Area, a nonpartisan voters' service organization which she's been a member of for more than fifty years. She also served as a Field Coordinator in the Bay Area for the Youth for Understanding International Exchange Program. Mazie received the Commissioner Service Award for her work in Alameda, Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties from the California State Library, and earned a Voters Service Award for work in the development and completion of the Bay Area Rapid Transit System. While working at Chabot College, she secured a BA in Urban Studies and then worked at Cal State University until her early retirement. She currently serves on the White Mountain Women’s Club's Scholarship Committee, is a Board Member for both the Pinetop-Lakeside Senior Center and the literacy charity Books for Kids-AZ, and just completed a term serving on the Pinetop-Lakeside Planning and Zoning Commission.
Mazie started her career working in libraries: Hayward Public Library, San Leandro Public Library, San Lorenzo Unified School District Library, the Chabot Community College Independent Study Center (which was one of the first to offer off-campus students classes via book, computer, and monitored finals, allowing them to achieve AA degrees and learn work skills), and finally the Cal State University Library, where she "retired." Changing her career path, instead, she was employed as a System Analyst at ADP in San Ramon, and then completed her working career when she moved to Twain Harte, California full time – as Assistant to the CEO of Sonora Community Hospital.
She and her husband, Paul Merritt Hastings (now deceased) of Oakland, have two adult children and five grandchildren.
Mazie loves classic cars and supporting non-profits – she's helped out the Humane Society, the Historical Society, the Nature Center, the Senior Center, the Friends of the Library, and the Safe House. Her favorite activity of all is spending time in her "forever home" in Pinetop-Lakeside, where she can expand her love of reading, poetry, and public service.
